Ice Show!

On April 7th at 6:00 p.m and April 8th at 1:00 p.m, the Martha’s Vineyard Figure Skating Club is holding its 30th annual Ice Show. The theme is 30 Rocks on Ice. That means that all of the music is from 30 years ago (1988). The Ice Show is an amazing event, not only because the rink gets decked out full on with a bake sale, raffle, curtain, black paper, spotlights, and brochures complete with pictures and ads. The entire club participates with ability levels ranging from the Snowplow Sam preschool program, the Tots, Learn to Skate, Bridge, all the way to Freestyle.

Over the course of the year, the entire club works really hard to put together an amazing show. The ice show is actually a fundraiser for the club, so there is an admission fee of $25 for a family and $10 adults, and $5 per child/senior. Hope to see you this weekend at the MV Ice Arena.

Harry Potter Review

by Samantha, Grade 6

Books. They are wondrous; you can travel to the jungle with Mowgli or down the rabbit hole with Alice. You never know where they will take you. However, my favorite book series (so far), which has taken me to a magical school called Hogwarts, is the Harry Potter series.

My advice to any reader who loves funny, adventurous and amazing stories is to read Harry Potter. Even if you don’t like to read, there is no better place to start. When I was little, I rarely read anything because I could never find a book I liked. One day, my mom plopped a book on the table. I looked at the cover: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The book was huge, and I never thought I could read it.

I proved myself wrong.

After I read it, I ran to the library to check out the next book, and the next, and the next. Now, as I have recently finished the last book, I find myself with mixed feelings.  I am proud of myself for finishing the series, but I’m also sad and sorry that it’s over. I realize though, that I shouldn't be sad it’s over, I should appreciate that I got to read it and I’m forever grateful that my mom plopped it on the table in front of me that fateful day.

                        The Voices

By :Sydney Emerson

The first thing I heard was animals running.

I saw a deer zip past me.

The wind lashed against my face.

The cold nipped at my nose and toes.

Then I heard the voices, they called me, begged me to come.

I ran, the voices didn’t stop, they just got louder and louder.

Blood ran to my face, the voices... they pounded in my ears.

The wind swirled around me.

I felt frozen.

They sounded so so sad.

“Come to us” they said. “Help us,” I tried to run but I was frozen in place.

Then I saw my old dog - the one that died last year, he was crying.

I wanted to help him but when I reached out to touch him he vanished.

I heard another voice, it was my brother’s. He was screaming, calling bloody murder.

I didn’t know where it was coming from. I screamed his name telling him I was coming.

Then I heard the loudest scream of all, the scream you scream when you're dying.

Then the voices stopped, all was quiet.

I ran home. My brother was fine. I never heard the voices again.
