Poem
by Josh, Grade 5

Running my hand across his lush, rich fur. Scratching behind his ears, he loves it.

He is full of energy, but this seems to calm him down.

I attach his leash to his collar, and take him outside.

We run to a field, and I take his leash off. He runs around so fast, I bet he can beat the wind in a race.

He rolls around in the mud, his black and white fur spotted with brown.

His brown and blue eyes begging for me to wrestle with him.

I run around, him chasing me. I turn around and get on all fours.

He tackles me and starts licking my face, I playfully shove him off and wipe my face off, disgusted because no one knows where he sniffs with that nose.

He seems to smile. I get on my knees and grab on to his torso.

I drag him on top of me, and we just lay there together for a while.

I hear my mom calling so I leash him up again and we walk home.

We get on the couch together, and he looks like he is remembering the fun we had -- or that’s just his usual look, I can’t tell.

He sprawls on top of me;  my hand resting on his head, him breathing heavily.

We fall asleep like that, together.

My mom wakes me up for dinner. C’mon mom!

I feed him, pouring his food into his blue bowl, he eats happily, and noisily.

During dinner, he curls up at my feet.

I can hear him breathing over the talking of my family.

After dinner I take him outside once more just around the yard.

I can’t wait for tomorrow!

Last week in 5th Grade Social Studies, we are working on Explorer trading cards. Some of the explorers we are studying are:

Christopher Columbus

Sir Francis Drake

Francisco Pizarro

Francisco Coronado

and more. We made trading cards

with pictures on the front and

information on the back.

In ELA we are reading Morning Girl by Michael Dorris. We worked on adjective projects and noun projects.

In Science, we are doing our rock journeys. We went around in the room and rolled dice that had things written on them like "wind erosion" and we had to make comic strips on storyboard.com.

We also went to the Energy Fair at Edgartown School last week. At the fair, we learned about different types of electricity. We also saw a Van De Graaff generator and a steam engine. It was put on by the Edgartown 5th graders. They did a great job.

We also had community lunch last week. It was a blast and we can't wait for the next one.
